Our Coaches
THE D1 COACHING STAFF (2009-10 Season)

Shane Davis – Coach Davis is the head volleyball coach at Loyola University Chicago where he has had great success. He has been named Midwest Coach of the Year twice as well as won the MIVA in 2005 and 2006. He has coached five All-Americans and two MIVA Player of the Years. Shane was also an All-American setter for the Ramblers.
Matt Martin – Coach Martin is an assistant coach at Loyola University Chicago and is in hi 3rd season with D1. Coach Martin is heavily involved with USA Volleyball and you’ll see him running tryouts across the country as well as coaching programs like the Junior National Team.

Troy Vidovic – Coach Vidovic is one of the most accomplished young coaches in the Chicago area. He founded Chicago Select VBC prior to D1 and coached 3 Illinois High School Players of the Year and had 4 Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selections in just 2 years.

Denis Bergstedt – Coach Bergstedt is one of the most recognizable volleyball personalities in the Midwest. He coaches for Brother Rice High School and has had several top finishes at USA Junior Nationals, most recently a 3rd place finish in 18 Open in 2008 for Ultimate Volleyball Club. Denis is one of the best referees in the Midwest also and we are excited to have him coaching for D1 this year!

Adam Beck – Coach Beck joins D1 this year after a long time affiliation with Sports Performance Volleyball Club. He’s been one of the best coaches in the Midwest for 15 years and brings a wealth of success and experience. You’ll also see Adam keeping busy as the tournament director for the boys events at Palos Courts.

Adam Stempel – Coach Stempel begins his 3rd season with D1 and was one of the founding coaches with the program. He played his college volleyball at Cardinal Stritch University and was an all state player at Niles North. Adam is still one of the best sand players in Chicago and the Midwest.

Mark Hulse – Mark Hulse comes to D1 after an extremely successful college volleyball career. Mark was a setter at Rutgers-Newark University prior to transferring to Pepperdine where he was a starting middle blocker on the 2008 team who reached the National Championship match. Hulse played club ball for Adversity and is a graduate of Evanston High School.

Frank Salerno – Coach Salerno returns for his second year with D1. He has been coaching since 2003 as the JV Boys Head Volleyball coach at New Trier. Prior to being hired at NT as a science teacher and coach, Frank played for Sports Performance Volleyball Club and later attended Loyola University Chicago where he lettered for two years.

Dave Carlson – Another new and welcome addition to the staff at D1 is Coach Carlson. Most recently Dave coached the women’s team at Pitt after playing professionally in Denmark. Dave was an All-MIVA setter at Ball State after transferring from Long Beach State.

Mario Jez – Another Loyola Rambler men’s player coaching at D1 is Mario Jez. Jez will be a senior outside hitter this year and is no stranger to success at the high school level. Mario was an All-Illinois player in high school and won numerous awards. He is a graduate of Glenbard East and played club for Sports Performance.

Derek Jensen – Jensen returns to D1 for a 3rd season after finishing his career as Loyola’s starting libero and captain. Another All-Illinois player for West Chicago, Derek also played club for Sports Performance and was named All-American in 2003.

Teddy Adamczyk – Coach Adamczyk returns to Chicago after 2 years at UCLA. He is currently a member of the team at Loyola and will bring lots of elite level experience to D1. Teddy was a member of the USA Volleyball Youth and Junior National teams as well as being an All-Illinois player and state champion at Maine South.

Kyle Exline – Coach Exline once again returns to D1 while continuing his career as a Rambler. He is a junior setter and will serve as co-captain for the team this year. One of the most fiery players in the MIVA, Exline earned the starting setters position at the end of the 2009 season. Coach Exline played club for Ultimate and is a graduate of Oak Lawn.

Dan Friend – Coach Friend is the head volleyball coach at Lewis University. He’s been a college head coach for 13 seasons in both men’s and women’s and has returned Lewis to national prominence. Coach Friend spent the summer with the USA Youth National team helping them to a 10th place finish at World Championships.

Ian Anderson – Coach Anderson is back again to lend his expertise to D1. He helped the 17 Green team throughout the season last year while following up an outstanding career for the Ramblers. Ian was MIVA First team and one of the nations leaders in kills per game as a senior.

Drew Pickering – Coach Pickering begins his coaching career after 4 years as one of the most successful players in Lewis University history. Drew was All-MIVA 3 times including MIVA Player of the Year and an AVCA All-American in 2009.

Nick Kamberos – Coach Kamberos begins his second season as a coach with D1. Nick was one of the founding members of the D1 program as he played for the 18’s team in our inaugural season. He played volleyball for Stagg High School and is hoping to continue his career as a college player in 2010.

Tony Gagliarducci - Tony returns for his second year with D1 after graduating from Loyola and playing varsity volleyball for the Ramblers. "Gags" is originally from St. Louis where he was a Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection and played for St. Louis High Performance volleyball club.
